Understanding Applications:

The Building Blocks of Modern Technology

Me: “Why did the computer show up to work late?"

Total stranger: “Cause it had a hard drive”.

In a recent interview, I was asked the question, “What is an application and provide some examples of applications”. Such a basic question, right? We use the word “app” or “apps” everyday but do we really understand what it is. The truth is, at the time, I did not have the right words to use to describe an application, a very basic word in our modern world, and that is why we are here, to “Understand Applications: The Building Blocks of Modern Technology”.

Applications are software programs that run on a variety of devices, such as smartphones or computers, which are designed to perform specific tasks and provide users with a convenient and intuitive way to interact with technology. For example, we use WhatsApp to communicate and Spotify to stream music from all over the world.

Applications can be divided into two main categories: native applications and web-based applications. Native applications are written in a specific programming language for a particular operating system such as iOS or Android OS, and must be installed directly on the device. For example:

• iMessage for Ios

• Messages for Android

Web-based applications on the other hand, run on the internet and can be accessed from any device within a web browser such as Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, and they do not require installation on a user’s device. Some examples include:

• Google Drive

• Gmail

• Trello

• Jumia

Applications can range from simple, single-purpose tools such as a calculator or a weather app, to complex, multi-functional programs such as a word processor or a gaming platform. One of the key benefits of applications is that they allow users to perform specific tasks, quicky and easily, without having to navigate through a complex software program. This can save time and increase productivity, making applications an essential too for many people both in their personal and professional lives.

Overall, applications play a critical role in the modern technology landscape. They provide users with easy and intuitive ways to interact with their devices, increase productivity, and offer a level of customization that makes technology more personal and accessible. Whether you are a casual user or a professional, understanding applications is an essential part of understanding the technology that surrounds us.
